Reserved phone and video appointments keep the one-hour minimum. Beyond that minimum, billing follows actual connected time. Immediate calls are metered from the start without a booking minimum; availability must be confirmed.

Court assignments are charged at what the particular court currently pays Vietnamese interpreters at my applicable credential level. Confirm that rate for each assignment. Private civil depositions use the separate rate above. All court and deposition bookings require at least 24 hours’ cancellation notice.

Billing, actual time & cancellations

Medical Zoom/video time is measured from when I join the appointment and am ready to interpret until I am released, using connection timestamps. Telephone appointments use the corresponding connected-call time. Setup before the appointment and time disconnected for technical problems are excluded. A connection log is enough; no audio or video recording is needed for billing.

Scheduled medical appointments have a one-hour minimum. After that, remote appointments are prorated to the second, without 15-minute rounding. For example, 70 connected minutes cost $70 at $60/hour; a 30-minute reserved appointment still has a $60 minimum. On-site medical time beyond the first hour is rounded up in 15-minute blocks at $18.75 per block.

Immediate medical phone/video calls use actual connected duration, prorated to the second, with no booking minimum or connection fee. Final monetary totals are rounded to the nearest cent. Requesting availability or arranging the connection is free.

Court and private civil deposition bookings have a two-hour minimum. Additional private deposition time is billed in whole-hour blocks, rounding up any partial hour. For example, a private deposition lasting 2 hours 10 minutes costs $300 before agreed expenses. Mandatory court payment rules take precedence for court-funded assignments.

Give at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel a scheduled medical, court, or deposition assignment. Any late-cancellation charge must be agreed in writing when booking. Immediate requests do not reserve a future appointment.

Rates cover one interpreter. When an assignment requires a second interpreter or a team, staffing and the total fee are agreed before booking. Existing signed agreements govern the assignments they cover.

These are 4terp’s travel defaults for private bookings. Travel time has no single nationwide rate. Agreed travel time and mileage cover different costs and may both apply; they are itemized separately and are never billed simultaneously with interpreting time. Shared-trip costs are not charged in full to multiple clients. Court reimbursement rules take precedence where required.

INTERPRETER ETIQUETTE

Make every conversation clearer.

Practical guidance for courts, attorneys, law enforcement, healthcare teams, immigration officers, and clients.

Speak directly to each other

Address the other person directly. The interpreter speaks in the first person, conveying each speaker's words as their own. Avoid asking the interpreter to tell or ask the other person something on your behalf.

Take turns and allow time

Speak one at a time, using short, complete thoughts. Pause to allow the full message to be interpreted. Avoid side conversations and speaking over others.

Keep the message complete and accurate

The interpreter conveys the full message without adding or leaving out information. They may ask for repetition or clarification. Raise a possible error immediately so it can be clarified or corrected.

Maintain impartiality

The interpreter remains neutral and discloses conflicts of interest. An assignment may need to be declined or ended if a conflict or other limitation prevents impartial, accurate interpreting.

Respect confidentiality

Treat information shared during the assignment as confidential. The interpreter may take notes to support accuracy; those notes must also be handled confidentially. Agree on a secure way to share preparation materials.

Understand the interpreter's role

The interpreter conveys communication and does not add personal opinions or provide independent legal or medical advice. Direct substantive questions to the appropriate attorney, judge, officer, or healthcare provider. For remote sessions, use a quiet space and check the audio before starting.
